Daniel Godwin was the younger brother of Samuel Godwin, the husband of Sarah Godwin, and the father of William, Beth, and Anne Godwin. He was a yeoman from the village of Adcombe. He and his entire household save for Will died of smallpox in the year 1664.

Background[]

When Daniel was born, his brother Samuel despised him with a passion. He hated him to the point where he secretly almost murdered the infant Daniel. As the siblings grew the goodhearted Daniel saw that his elder brother was cruel and evil, regarding Samuel as "a bit too clever for his own good" and cutting off contact with him. Samuel resented the fact that their father gave the estate to Daniel rather than him, the eldest. At some point Samuel moved from Adcombe to London, changing his name to Elias Theophrastus Spittle.
