Lost Sweethearts Day is observed by mice on 19 April, the date when the tragic mouse lovers of legend, Myrtle Cotton and Eglan Quince, perished. Eglan fell into the River Thames and Myrtle leaped in to save him, but both died. Their tale is remembered in the dance 'Eglan and his Lady Love'. On this day, many mice fill a bowl with water and stare into it whilst brushing their hair. The reflection of the one they will marry is said to appear in the water at the stroke of midnight.
