The Great Book, sometimes referred to as the Book of Hrethel, was a tome of magic spells used by the bats. In the Middle Ages, Hrethel was the Warden of the Great Book. He gained much wisdom and power from it, but became so obsessed with it that he refused to let anyone else read it, touch it, or even see it. In his chamber below St. Paul's Cathedral he stayed with his prize, even as the bat army became aware of his treachery and besieged his chamber.

Centuries later, the bats in the present day wondered if the spells contained in the Great Book was strong enough to defeat the spirit of Jupiter. They sent the albino mouse Oswald Chitter below the cathedral to find it, but when he did he discovered that the pages had been wiped clean by Hrethel as a last way to spite his enemies. However, the magic was still present on the empty pages, though it proved not enough to stop Jupiter.
