The Deptford Mice Wiki

Yule is a three day festival celebrated by mice. It lasts from the 9th to 11th of January, during the time of year when the Midwinter Death seems to press closest as cold storms rage and food is scarce. The mice gather together and light fires to keep the winter cold away.

In the Skirtings, the mice enjoyed an ample supply of food year-round from the larder of the blind lady who lived next door. As such, they could enjoy Yule without worrying about the hardships of winter. For them, the holiday was a time of feasting and telling ghost stories. The mice would decorate the hall with sprigs of evergreen and bright streamers made by the children. They hauled a large roof slate out to the centre of the Hall and built a fire over it.
